Katy Carmichael Lucy Barlow

Katy Carmichael Lucy Barlow

Katy Carmichael played Lucy Barlow on Coronation Street in the early 2000’s. The storyline that she was a part of was that her character married a man that, unbeknownst to her, was already married. Both women discovered this fact and were not too happy about it. It was an outlandish storyline, but it was a fairly big one. Her character was the one who was the angriest about the situation. She had this way of always flaring her nostrils and looking very annoyed at all times.

On one of the talk shows at the time, they decided to play off the storyline. It was basically a Noel’s House Party set up where the actresses to the parts of the characters that they were playing. The public had the job of calling in and voting for which of the ladies that they wanted the husband to stay with. Katy was pitted against Sally Lyndsey who played the other wife. Sally’s character was more of a main character on the show and she was a more sympathetic character as well, so Katy was already at a disadvantage, even though neither character had done anything wrong, Lucy was a bit over the top with her anger and her lust for revenge. The character who lost would end up on the gunge tank.

Katy and Sally were both very nervous. When they were spoken to about the gunge tank, they each just said that they were not looking forward to it. They did not wish the tank on the other at all though. Finally, the time came to reveal the voting results. Their faces were shown on either side of the screen. The tank was in the middle and gunge would fall on both sides to show the results. It was revealed that the vote was closer than one may have imagined. It was slowly revealed that 65 percent wanted to see Shelley end up with the husband. Katy put both hands to her face as her mouth dropped. She shook her head and laughed.

The tank door was opened and she sat inside. Sally smiled and said, “Sorry, love.” Katy’s mouth fell open as gallons of green and purple gunge poured over her head, down her face and all over her body. Sally laughed as well. Gunge ran down Katy’s nose and cheeks. She looked up as gunge engulfed her face. She held her hands out as the gunge rained onto her hands. She shook her head and laughed as the gunge slowed to a stop.

She took a deep breath and tossed her hair. She held her hands in front of her. She was completely covered in gunge. The audience cheered for her because she had been such a good sport. She was very different from her character who was portrayed as vengeful and angry. The host and Sally waived to her as the tank turned around.
