Lori Singer Footloose

Lori Singer played Ariel in Footloose. Her character was always at odds with her father, played by John Lithgow. They argued because of some of his belief. They were misguided, but well-meaning to some extent. The two were selected to appear on a messy gameshow where family members were pitted against each other. The winner would get the opportunity to mess their family member. The whole thing was Ariel’s idea. It was a way to get back at her Dad. She thought that the idea of possibly covering her Dad with mess was hilarious. She never really gave any consideration to the possibility that it could backfire on her.

The family was in the audience of the show. It was similar to What Would You Do. The host asked for anyone in the audience who wanted to challenge their parent. Ariel’s hand shot up right away. The host came her way and spoke to her, “Young lady, is this your Dad? Do you want to challenge him?” “Oh yeah,” she shouted enthusiastically. “Ok, come down and join me on stage,” the host asked. They joined him on stage. He then asked her to introduce herself and her father which she did.

“Ok, so here how it works, we have a simple challenge. You both will get a chance. Whoever does better will be declared the winner. They will then have an important decision to make on behalf of the loser. Believe me, you do not want to be the loser. Today our game is simply basketball shooting. You will each get five shots, whoever can make the most will be the winner.” Ariel was allowed to go first. She was able to make three shots. She believed her father could not beat that because he was older. He also was very tall. He made his first three shots. Ariel realised that she was in trouble. He then easily made the fourth, defeating her. Ariel laughed and threw her hands down, saying darn it.

The host then congratulated the father,” That was very good, you are clearly our winner. Now you have a decision to make. If you two can join me over here please. You can choose to take a prize, or, we could send your daughter to the pie pod which will include the crowning glory. What would you rather do?” Ariel’s eyes and mouth widened. She shook her head and asked him to please spare her. She was shocked when he blurted out,” Pie pod.” The audience cheered. Ariel blushed. Her mouth was open and she shook her head.

The host lead her to the pie pod. They then positioned the father behind, holding the release for the crowning glory. Ariel sat down. She looked up and backwards. She looked very embarrassed. She knew that her Dad would be loving this. The host then asked the audience to count down. They did so counting from three, two, one.

The pies then began to fly at her. The first landed on top of her head, smashing into her curly blonde hair. The second hit the left side of her face. The third slammed into the other side of her face. The fourth crashed into her chest. The first crashed on target in her face, knocking the other pie plates off, leaving her face, hair and chest smooshed with creamy pie. Her father then released the crowning glory upon her. Thick pink glop plopped down over her from above. She shook her head as the gunge stuck all over her hair and poured down over her face and shoulders. She was totally covered. Her father was then allowed to pick up one of the spare pies and pie her in the face again. Ariel could do nothing but laugh. She actually pumped her fist and went, “Woo, hoo.”
